HRAC GROUP 9 (LEGACY G) RESISTANT HAIRY FLEABANE
(Conyza bonariensis)

Inhibition of Enolpyruvyl Shikimate Phosphate Synthase HRAC Group 9 (Legacy G)

Spain, Sevilla, Cordoba, Huelva
INTRODUCTION HAIRY FLEABANE
Hairy Fleabane (Conyza bonariensis) is a dicot weed in the Asteraceae family.  In Spain this weed first evolved resistance to Group 9 (Legacy G) herbicides in 2004 and infests Orchards.   Group 9 (Legacy G) herbicides are known as Inhibition of Enolpyruvyl Shikimate Phosphate Synthase (Inhibition of EPSP synthase).  Research has shown that these particular biotypes are resistant to glyphosate and they may be cross-resistant to other Group 9 (Legacy G) herbicides.

The 'Group' letters/numbers that you see throughout this web site refer to the classification of herbicides by their site of action. To see a full list of herbicides and HRAC herbicide classifications click here.

If we do not have a picture for this weed, or you can provide a better picture (scan, digital camera etc) please please e-mail it to us.

BIOASSAYS

Jose Maria Urbano
A survey was made in 50 locations and Conyza bonariensis seed collected in december 2003. For each location, seed collected was planted in separated pots and plants were sprayed at rosette stage with 0,66 l/ha of glyphosate 36%. Fresh and dry biomass was scored 21 days after treatment. Significative differences were found when comparing the response of plants from different locations. The most resistant biotypes ussually corresponded with olives or oranges farms, with no-till and a historial of use of glyphosate, meanwhile the most sensitive biotypes corresponded to peaches farms with less use of glyphosate. The I50 determination revealed that the resistance factor was higher than 10 for the most resistant locations.

ACADEMIC ASPECTS

Confirmation Tests

Field, and Greenhouse trials comparing a known susceptible Hairy Fleabane biotype with this Hairy Fleabane biotype have been used to confirm resistance. For further information on the tests conducted please contact the local weed scientists that provided this information.

Genetics

Genetic studies on HRAC Group 9 resistant Hairy Fleabane have not been reported to the site.  There may be a note below or an article discussing the genetics of this biotype in the Fact Sheets and Other Literature

Mechanism of Resistance

The mechanism of resistance for this biotype is either unknown or has not been entered in the database.  If you know anything about the mechanism of resistance for this biotype then please update the database.

Relative Fitness

Researchers have indicated that Group 9/G resistant Hairy Fleabane is ecologically less fit than normal susceptible Hairy Fleabane.  There may be a note below or an article discussing the fitness of this biotype in the Fact Sheets and Other Literature
